There are two reasons why I enjoy the Flashman Papers:
First and foremost, the history. Flashman is center stage against a backdrop of the most significant military and politcal events of the 19th Century. The descriptions of places, people and situations are detailed and for the most part accurate. In addition, Flashman brings the past to life by sharing the insight and emotions invoked by experiencing these events first hand.
Secondly, the humor. No matter how debauched or deadly the situation, Flashman puts a comical spin to it. Flashman's humor is sarcastic, irreverent and witty. We can all use more humor in our lives.
So there you have it. The history and the humor. That's what I like about the Flashman Papers. There are several
sites that expand on the history ... the places, people, things and events associated with Flashman. But none address the humor ... until now. This website will attempt to highlight the Humor of the Flashman Papers by capturing Flashy's thoughts and words or predicaments that bring about a smirk, a smile or a laugh. For referencing purposes, entries are organized by packet (novel) and listed by chapter:paragraph. Since the packets have been published in hardback and one or more paperback editions, page numbers are not consistent.
Each entry begins with the chapter:paragraph and a description of the context. Dialog is preceded by source and quoted. Thoughts or narration are in italics.
In addition, Charles Kamp, the famous (or is it infamous?) Flashman
impersonator naively provided me a list of his favorite Flashman
Phrases, which I promptly stole and posted.
